Boise, Idaho ~ Front House Reimagined

There’s something magical about reimagining a front yard—it’s like giving the house a new personality, one that greets every visitor with a bloom and a smile. My latest client wanted charm, elegance, and just a touch of whimsy. Challenge accepted.

I began with a strong structural backbone—Sky Pencil Holly (Ilex crenata ‘Sky Pencil’)—tall, slender, and ever-so-stylish. These green columns anchor the garden, offering year-round form and a lovely contrast to the softer blooms.

With the structural elements in place, I turned my attention to the floral palette. I couldn’t resist pairing two hydrangeas for a dreamy, old-soul vibe. Incrediball Hydrangea (Hydrangea arborescens ‘Incrediball’) brings those giant, cloudlike white blooms, while Dancing Snow Hydrangea (Hydrangea paniculata ‘Dancing Snow’) pirouettes with airy elegance. Together, they create a lush stage for the rest of our floral cast.

To add energy and movement, I invited in the Summer Phlox (Phlox paniculata)—bold, pink, and playful—and its graceful cousin, Lady White Phlox (Phlox paniculata ‘Lady White’), whose pure white blooms catch the sunlight like little lanterns.

The middle layer needed something wild and wonderful. Enter the Pale Coneflower (Echinacea pallida) and her sassier sister, the Purple Coneflower (Echinacea purpurea). Their dancing petals and upright nature give the garden that carefree, meadow-kissed look I adore.

And to tie everything together, a drift of White Yarrow (Achillea millefolium) spills in like delicate lace—soft, unfussy, and pollinator-friendly, too.

The result? A front yard that feels like a curated daydream. It’s formal enough to impress, but loose enough to feel like nature just happened to get it exactly right. My client was thrilled—and honestly, so was I.

Every flower has a role, a rhythm, a bit of mischief. That’s the secret to a front yard that sings.
