There’s something uniquely rewarding about transforming a backyard into a densely planted cottage-style sanctuary—especially when it ends in a greenhouse nestled like a hidden jewel. My client envisioned lush layers, a sense of discovery, and a little magic along the way. Together, we created just that.
Against the back fence, we started with height and romance—three types of clematis now climb in graceful waves: Arabella in soft pinks and purples, a classic white variety, and the bold Blue Angel tucked in the farthest corner. Just off-center stands a Knockout Tree Rose, providing a sculptural focal point with continual color, surrounded by cheerful Black-Eyed Susans that nod in the breeze.
To shape the space, we installed a rustic ledge made of reclaimed railroad ties. On top, we planted Creeping Thyme to mimic a lush green lawn—soft underfoot, fragrant, and perfect for low-traffic paths. At the heart of this upper ledge, a graceful Cedar Deodar tree anchors the design, its feathery branches creating a sense of quiet grandeur. Around its base, Firewitch Dianthus adds vibrant pops of magenta and a sweet scent that drifts in the shade.
Below the ledge, the garden becomes even more textured and immersive. Tall Chinese Silver Grasses sway on either side, catching light and creating movement. Between them, we layered in Yarrow ‘Moonshine’, White Coneflowers, and the dramatic foliage of Blue and Honeybell Hostas. Husker Red Penstemon adds striking color and vertical contrast, forming soft garden paths that naturally guide visitors toward the greenhouse.
Each side of the path is anchored by richly hued Miss Molly Butterfly Bushes, beloved by pollinators and clients alike. Near the greenhouse, a quiet fountain bubbles peacefully, framed by striped Gold Bar Grass—a small detail that adds rhythm and light.
In the far back, Mixed Pentas and Lavender Chiffon Hibiscus provide subtle layering and seasonal color. Thanks to the shade throughout the space, our chosen plant palette should thrive with minimal intervention.
The end result is a backyard that feels tucked away from the world—layered, fragrant, and alive with color from spring to fall. It’s a path that invites slow steps, curious eyes, and quiet moments—leading right to the heart of the garden: the greenhouse itself.
